A kumquat by any other name…
Is still a kumquat, and just not a funny-looking orange. It is, however, also the name of the WCC library’s challenge to students and faculty to write a poem using ten words selected by the faculty. Poems can be any length and contain any school-appropriate material. They must be sent to the library with the poet’s (or poets’) name(s), connection to WCC, a brief biography, and a title for the poem. The top three poets will win a plate of home-baked goodies, and a selection representative of the styles and themes will be printed in an anthology. Poems using the words, spelled correctly, with or without prefixes and suffixes, charm, keep, wind, step, element, fold, remote, curtain, never, and foster, must be submitted to wccpoet@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m. on April 29.
The Orca cam is up and spyhopping
The webcam approved by and paid for by students last quarter has been mounted on the Syre Student Center and is broadcasting. The webcam shows a still of the Syre courtyard, and can be reached through the Whatcom homepage.
Spring quarter fever
Spring quarter is coming up, and entry and advising staff are recommending that students register early in order to get the classes they want. If you would like to meet with an advisor prior to Feb 27 to confirm which courses you have remaining in your academic plan, advisors are available in LDC 116 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Beginning Feb 27, advisors will be available in LDC 118. You must arrive by 4 p.m. to see an advisor. Bring your unofficial WCC transcript, transcripts from other colleges/universities (if applicable), and your current quarter schedule to your advising meeting.

Got math?
The next Math Colloquium will be on Feb 23 from 3:35 to 5 p.m. in LDC 125. In this colloquium, Russell Stevenson will be presenting some interesting problems and paradoxes in the field of mathematics.
Survey crew ahead
The Associated Students of Whatcom Community College are leading a survey that will discuss the potential expansion of Whatcom’s Pavilion recreation center. The survey will take place throughout the week of March 5, and tables will be set up in Syre, Laidlaw, Heiner, Cascade, as well as many other buildings around campus. Surveys will also be passed out around campus. The goal of the survey is to determine whether students support the estimated $10 million project that would expand the Pavilion to include a second story track, new workout equipment, and other multi-use rooms. The building, if approved, would be built in the next few years, and would not cost students additional S&A fees.
“We want everyone’s opinion, it’s so important that this decision is the campus’ decision,” said Kelsey Rowlson, ASWCC’s Public Relations Chair and member of the Pavilion Expansion committee.
Hamlin Fistula Funding
Whatcom student Makela Alem is organizing a fundraiser to take place on campus on March 9th. This event will benefit the Hamlin Fistula Fund which acts to aid women recovering from childbirth injuries in Ethiopia.
The tax man cometh
The Business club and the WWU Beta Alpha Psi Accounting club are sponsoring an income tax assistance program at WCC. WCC accounting students will be available to prepare tax returns for low-income indigent and elderly students. The program is free of charge. The program will be held in Heiner on Mondays from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
