For fun on a budget, the Whatcom Museum’s First Free Fridays are a great family opportunity or date night.
The Whatcom Museum is located in downtown Bellingham. Both permanent and changing exhibits fill the galleries of the Old City Hall on Commercial Street and the Lightcatcher Building on Flora Street. Fun exhibits and activities are featured at the Family Interactive Gallery (FIG) located inside the Lightcatcher.
On the first Friday of each month the museum opens its doors for free admission. The next Free First Friday will be October 4, 2024. The museum also observes extended hours, staying open until 9 p.m. at both the Old City Hall and the Lightcatcher. The FIG closes at 7 p.m.
October’s Free Friday includes activities and performances recognizing Indigenous People’s Day (October 14). Special events include storytelling, musical performances and paper weaving.
Part of the museum’s permanent exhibits, the “People of the Sea and Cedar” honors the Coast Salish Indigenous peoples. This beautiful and educational exhibit is a must-see.
A full schedule of events for Free First Friday and a list of all exhibits can be found on the museum’s website.
