“It’s Late Night with…the library!”
“Late Nights at the Library,” the quarter-ending tradition offering extended hours, coffee, cookies, and other sweet treats to students engrossed in the stresses of end-of-quarter work and projects, is back.
The Whatcom library will be open an extra hour (until 10 p.m.) on: Wednesday, March 17; Thursday, March 18; Monday, March 22; Tuesday, March 23.
The library’s Saturday hours will remain the same (noon to 4 p.m.), but muffins and coffee will be available.
Bands Be Battlin’ on March 19
Whatcom’s “Battle of the Bands” will be held in the Syre Student Center auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Five bands are set to compete. An X-box console with Guitar Hero will also be set up and available to play in the auditorium beginning at 11 a.m.
Dude, there’s plants for sale!
The Whatcom Conservation District will be hosting their 17th Annual Native Plant Sale and Expo on March 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Roe Studio. The purpose of the sale is to “promote stewardship and conservation of our natural resources.”
Over 40 species of plants will be available, including low cost native plants, seedlings, and shrubs. The sale will include several local nursery vendors. There will also be music, as well as food and other refreshments. Proceeds from the sale will support the WCD’s conservation education programs.

Getting down to brass tax (assistance)
Students, low income families, and seniors can receive help with filing their income taxes through April 15 in the Heiner Center lobby at Whatcom Community College. The tax assistance is done by Whatcom Business Club students who’ve completed a 20-hour certification program.
Those interested should bring social security cards for themselves, as well as for a spouse or any dependents. If possible, those interested should also include: a copy of last year’s return, including all W-2 forms, all 1099s received, any 1098 or other forms from your college, or anything else you feel may be needed to complete your return.
Help is available during the following times: Mondays and Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No help will be available on Feb. 26 or between March 25 and April 4.
Sluys brings home gold from Canada
Daphne Sluys, director of Whatcom’s Math Center and a national record-holding decathlete, recently brought home two gold medals from Canada. And no, it wasn’t in the Olympics. Sluys competed at the 2010 World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships, held in Kamloops, British Columbia from March 1 to 6.
Competing in the women’s 45 to 49 age group, Sluys took home gold in the pentathlon (a five-event competition comprised of the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800-meter-dash, all in one afternoon) and the pole vault. The 49-year-old finished first among her age group in the hurdles, shot put, long jump, and 800-meter dash, good enough to outscore the second-place pentathlon competitor by nearly 200 points overall.
Miss Whatcom County event to be held @ WCC
The Miss Whatcom County 2010 Scholarship Pageant, which will hand out more than $6,000 in scholarships, is being held in the Syre Student Center auditorium on March 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Whatcom student and Miss Whatcom County 2009, Chandler Batiste, will pass her crown to her successor. Eleven contestants, two of whom attend Whatcom, will compete in the following categories: interview, swimsuit/physical fitness, talent, onstage questions, and evening wear. The winner will head to Renton in July to compete for the title of Miss Washington.
Luck of Irish comes to WCC
A celebration of St. Patrick’s Day will be held in the Syre Student Center auditorium beginning at 11 a.m. on March 17. There will be free baked potatoes and punch, and Irish music will be played. Student activities advisor Josh Turpen said everyone should wear green.
Horizon staff member wins scholarship
Horizon staff member Kelly Sullivan was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. She will be serving as an intern at a WNPA newspaper for eight weeks. Congratulations, Kelly!
