YAL Club speaker and funding
Johnny Weaver of the Young Americans for Liberty club told the council that political activist Anthony Wallace will speak at the college on Wed., Oct. 13. Weaver was also present for a motion voted on by the council that requested $130 to send two YAL club members to a Youth Leadership School for leadership training. The motion passed 4-1.
Big Butt Problem
One of the new general council members, Sonny Shoepe, reported a constituent concern regarding people dumping cigarette butts into the fountain near the Heiner Center.
Oct. 7:
Involving the Student Body
The student council wants to add a student leadership table downstairs in Syre so students can get council information, including the council’s agenda, Orca talks, etc. The council members also want to get the student body more involved in decision-making at the school by surveying students on campus concerns.
Capital Projects
Student council has a number of Capital Projects coming up, including making improvements on the Health Center. They want to expand the weight room, and add more lockers to the locker rooms. They would also like to add a new projector screen to Syre. The council wants to give students monthly updates on the progress of Capital Projects.
Activities Hour Instead of Class?
The student council has proposed that there be an activities hour once a week at school, meaning that no classes would be scheduled during this hour, and the school could host events and get students more involved since no one would be in class.
Waste Audit
Whatcom’s second waste audit is coming up on Tuesday, October 12. Students will volunteer to go through a day’s worth of the school’s waste and separate recyclables from trash, and will have the opportunity to get hours for their service learning projects. The council passed a motion to spend $90 on snacks and refreshments for the event.
