End of the World?

“It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.”  R.E.M seems to put it best because, my friends, some people feel that we are nearing the end of the world. 

According to 7000years.com, you may have seen their signs on the Guide Meridian as you head towards Lynden, May 21st, 2011 marks Judgment Day, otherwise known as the beginning of the end of the world.  I actually found the fact that some people actually thinks it’s the end of the world so funny, that I took it upon myself to look up their website which reads, “On May 21st, Judgment Day will begin…on October 21st, the world will be destroyed by fire (7000 years from the flood; 13,023 years from creation).”          

Say what?

“The Bible teaches that on May 21st, 2011, only true believers elected by God to receive salvation will be raptured (taken up) out of this world to meet the Lord in the air and forever be with the Lord.  All the rest of mankind (billions of people) will be left behind to experience the awful judgment of God, a horrible period of 5 months of torment upon earth.”

Revelation 9:3-5 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

I personally don’t buy into it, and therefore, I feel fine.  But it makes me wonder if the people who believe that May 21st marks the beginning of the end of the world, are freaking out.  If I TRULY believed that the world was going to begin to end on May 21st, I would have long ago quit my job, stopped going to school, and would just let loose and do whatever I wanted.  No repercussions right?

Who knows though.  Maybe they’re right.  Maybe the end of the world is only days away.  Maybe I’ll be that sinner who doubted this end of the world and therefore I will be doomed to suffer for five months and then burn. 

Now that I think about it, maybe the shitty weather we’ve been having is a sign that we truly are at the end of the world?!

But probably not.

On May 22nd these people will be in shock that nothing significant happened.  And on October 22nd, they’ll be even more shocked.

When Google-ing the phrase “end of the world” I got a variety of answers.  People can’t seem to make up their minds!  2012, 2013, 2014, and so on.  Once they all agree, then maybe I’ll start to get concerned, but as for now.  I’m going to live life as usual.

Why do people feel the need to focus on the end of the world?  Do they need an excuse to quit their jobs?  Do they want attention?  Or are they just flat out crazy? 

For me though, on this particular beginning-of-the-end-of-the-world day, I’m going to celebrate.  I’m throwing a party.  People who are invited must bring rations (since we can’t be too safe when it comes to the end of the world) and they also must dress in the clothes that they’d like to die in.  Also included, will be an “end of the world” playlist.  Seems fitting, right?

I’m still trying to decide on my outfit though.  Do I go comfy and wear pajamas?  Do I dress up so I can go out looking pretty?  Or do I go for a swimsuit? Since I will be dying in a fire after all…it’ll be kind of hot.  Or maybe I should invest in a fire-retardant suit?
